Video: Isles Anders Lee Nails Carl Gunnarson with Elbow to Head

The Islanders lost a tough one, 6-4, to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday at the Nassau Coliseum, and they might lose forward Anders Lee as well.

Lee knocked out Blues' D-man Carl Gunnarsson with an elbow to the head during the second period, and Gunnarson had to leave the game with an upper-body injury.

The replay clearly reveals that Lee, although not likely headhunting, makes direct contact with Gunnarson's head along the boards. To be fair to Lee, Gunnarsson is in a bit of a crouch as he's eyeing the puck, but not excuse -- a hit to the head is a hit to the head.

What's interesting, funny and revealing about the video is the disparity in the takes on the play by the St. Louis broadcast and the Islanders broadcast. Darren Pang is all over the hit to the head as he calls the game for the Blues, but at the 1:27 mark, Butch Goring is in a bit of denial about the play on the Isles telecast. Kudos to Isles play-by-play man Howie Rose for helping Goring along, as he asks: "Did the elbow come up?" Why yes, it did...

No matter, the NHL will look at it objectively and may dish out some punishment to Lee, who has never been suspended and who only has 13 PIM's on the season.

Gunnarsson did not return to the game.
