Stars' Jason Demers Suspended Two Games for Elbow to Bonino

The NHL moved swiftly to suspend Jason Demers less than 24 hours after his elbow to the head knocked Nick Bonino out of the game and resulted in a five-minute major and a match penalty.

In its explanation the league points out that while Demers may have intended to "counter" a body check by Bonino on the play, he used his elbow recklessly and with great force. He throws an elbow "in a way that cannot be considered reflexive or defensive."

"His attempt at a counter-hit is badly mistimed," the league says, "leading to a reckless and forceful elbow to the face of Bonino."

It is Demers first suspension in his seven-year NHL career.
