Celebrating the 20-year Anniversary of Paul Coffey's 1000th Assist

To honor the 20th anniversary of Paul Coffey's 1,000th assist, the Saucer Pass is posting a little tribute video to one of the greatest offensive defenseman to ever lace 'em up. Maybe if defenseman in today's NHL could skate and make plays like Coffey, we wouldn't be suffering the dearth of scoring that is currently plaguing the NHL.

Or maybe not.

In any case, is there ever a wrong time to celebrate the first defenseman to notch 1,000 NHL assists? We think not...

Only 12 NHLers have reached the 1,000 assist mark, and only two of those players are defensemen. Ray Borque (1169 assists) is fourth on the all-time list. Coffey (1135 assists) is right behind Borque at 5th.

But it was Coffey who got their first:

Coffey, whose drop pass set up a goal by Detroit's Igor Larionov late in the first period, joined Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe and Marcell Dionne as the one of only four players in NHL history with 1,000 assists at the time.
