Video: Emelin Ejected for Interference Blind Side

The Montreal Canadiens were forced to finish off their 2-1 win over Columbus on Tuesday at the Bell Centre with only five defensemen after Alexei Emelin was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for interference on this late hit on Matt Calvert.

The hit itself could be considered clean but the fact that the puck was nowhere near an unsuspecting Calvert when Emelin connects on the hit makes it very questionable.

“I couldn’t tell you, It was that last much of a blindside," said Calvert, who returned to the game and finished with 15:04 of ice time. "I don’t even know where I got hit. It was a tough play. You’re not set for a hit and when got 200-plus pound guys hitting you at this speed in this league you want to be able to set yourself. Unfortunately, I couldn’t.”

“It’s one of those plays where you don’t see anything at all and you’re face-down on the ice,” Calvert added, according to Shawn Mitchell of BlueJackets Extra. “It didn’t feel too good obviously. Those things knock the wind out of you. But I was fortunate enough to be able to play the rest of the of game.”
