Toronto Maple Leafs G.M. Lou Lamorello spent some time talking about today's blockbuster 9-player trade between the Leafs and the Ottawa Senators, a deal that saw Dion Phaneuf dealt, along with forwards Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert and defense prospect Cody Donaghey for defenseman Jared Cowen, forwards Colin Greening, Milan Michalek and Tobias Lindberg, as well as Ottawa’s second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.
Lamoriello had nothing but praise for Phaneuf, but said he had to go in order for the Leafs to keep moving on with their "Plan." Listen to the video above for more details.
Phaneuf, 30, had to waive a no-movement clause for the deal to go through. He carries a $7 million cap hit through the 2018-2019 season.
The Edmonton native is the first Leafs captain to be traded since Doug Gilmour in 1997.
“He’s been a great leader, he’s handled every situation thrown at him, and he’s going to be missed," Lamoriello said. “Dion is going to leave a hole in our lineup, there’s certainly no question.”
