Watch: McDavid Wins McEichel Cup in Buffalo

It was a highly anticipated battle between the 26th and 29th best teams in the NHL. That may sound funny, but it's true. The top two draft picks in the 2015 NHL draft squared off in a battle that may not have mattered in the standings but had a whole lot of meaning to die-hard fans of these two beleagured franchises as well as fans of hockey's future.

What we've seen from Connor McDavid (12-19-31) and Jack Eichel (17-24-41) in their rookie seasons has been nothing short of fantastic, and the pair didn't disappoint on Tuesday night. In fact, they closed the show with a pair of end-to-end rushes that electrified the crowd and sent fans of both teams home happy (though Edmonton fans surely feel a bit better about McDavid's goal and the Oilers 2-1 win).

Style points to go Eichel, as the degree of difficulty on his spinning backhand was certainly higher than that of McDavid's winner. But like in the draft, McDavid came out on top. He slid home his 12th of the season and second of the game, ending the first of what we all hope will be a long litany of exciting head-to-head battles between these two.
