Mike Green's First Career Hattie Powers Wings Past Ottawa
Mike Green has been in the NHL for more than a decade and scored 123 goals in a fantastic career as an offensive defenseman. But Green had never notched a hat trick until tonight. The 31-year-old lit it up in the final home opener at the Joe Louis Arena, notching a hat-trick that powered the Red Wings to a lopsided 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators. Green scored two in the opening stanza then buried his third at 13:24 of the third. The Calgary native is the first Wings' defenseman to score a hat-trick since Nicklas Lidstrom's on Decemeber 15, 2010. Detroit (1-2) gets its first win of the season and drops Ottawa to 2-1. Thomas Vanek had three assists in the game and has five points in Detroit's first three.
