Backstrom Boards Ericsson, who Is Injured Badly on Play

Detroit will be without defenseman Jonathan Ericsson for a few months after fracturing his wrist when Nicklas Backstrom boarded him during the first period of Washington's 6-3 win at the Verizon Center on Thursday.

Backstrom got two for boarding on the play, and Detroit got some bad news after the game.

According to Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill, the timetable is unknown. "I don't have a total timetable, but I know it's a fractured wrist so to me that would put him in that frame," Blashill said.

Typically this injury is about a 6-8 week recovery time, reports NHL.com's Tom Gulitti.

The injury puts the Wings in a tough spot on the blue line. Ericsson was averaging 19:13 a game, and the team just lost defenseman Alexey Marchenko after waiving him. Detroit drops to 22-22-10 with the loss--they are tied with Buffalo and Tampa Bay for last place in the Eastern Conference.
