Montreal Signs Defenseman Jakub Jerabek to One-Year Deal

The Montreal Canadiens have signed Czech defenseman Jakub Jarebek to a one-year deal at an AAV of $925k. The 25-year-old left-shot defenseman put up 34 points in his first season in the KHL for Vityaz Podolsk this year. Jerabek played in 59 games and ranked fourth among league defensemen in assists and fifth in points.

He can become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The signing could push Nathan Beaulieu to the fringes in Montreal, as Mikhail Sergachev, Brandon Davidson, Alexei Emelin and Andrei Markov could all be competing for spots on the left side of Montreal's blue line next year.

Neither Jerabek or Sergachev have to be protected at this year's expansion draft.

According to Eric Engels of Sportsnet, the Habs could be looking at the possibility of trading Bealieu. The 24-year-old finished the season with a career-high 28 points and a plus-8, but reportedly is not being held in high regard by Montreal's brass.
